Kinloch
The Isle of Rum has a population of 31. We stayed in the hostel which is a castle. Although there are grander bedrooms with four-poster beds, we contented ourselves with a corner room, complete with its own turrett room (containing a writing desk).
Hallival
Again the tops of the mountains were covered in snow. Ian and Duncan felt less than sure of themselves on the way up and, basically, bottled out just after the snow line. Hermione and Grant went on to to the summit of Hallival. Ian skillfully lied to some other walkers, making out that he and Duncan had just come down from the ridge of the Rum Cuillins.
Boat back to Mallaig
We had wanted to go on the tour of the private half of the castle, where the real grandeur was hidden away, but the hostel warden advised to get the first boat off the island, which left before the tour started. He said there might not be a second boat that day, due to a coming storm. We got on the first boat, which took us first to Canna. However, on the way back from Canna there was an announcement that some people, who had stayed the night before at the bothy at Dibil on Rum, hadn't got on the boat and that the boat would return to Rum to collect them. Thus, the first boat became the second boat and we spent about four and a half hours at sea.
